Current shows and exhibitions in Paris pose both an exciting choice and an almost overwhelming prospect for the visitor to our fair city. There is simply so much happening in this world centre of art, culture and entertainment. Therefore we at the Hotel de l'Université will be happy to be of assistance by giving you our recommendations for some must-see events which will appeal to a wide range of tastes.
Current shows and exhibitions in Paris , a fine selection
The Paris International Agricultural Show will take place at the Porte de Versailles exhibition centre from February 22nd until March 2nd. This marvellous and huge show has plenty to entertain the whole family, whether you are professionally involved in the farming industry or not. Over a thousand exhibitors from all over the world will be showing their livestock and produce, and there will be some great gastronomic opportunities!
Hungarian born photographer and chronicler of the more unusual and little seen aspects of Paris, Brassai, is featured in a major retrospective in the Salle Saint-Jean at the City Hall entitled For The Love Of Paris, until March 31st. His compelling and atmospheric images caused quite a stir in the mid 20th century and still have the power to enthrall today. Meanwhile, at the Pompidou Centre from February 12th until June 9th, you can see the work of the French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, considered the father of photojournalism. Five hundred remarkable photographs, drawings and paintings cover seventy years of his creative life.
Until March 16th the Pinacotheque de Paris art gallery is hosting an insightful exhibition called Painters: Witnesses Of Their Time. This show examines artists as privileged spectators to the periods through which they lived. With the coming of photography, artists were freed to interpret the world around them rather than reproduce it. This principle is examined via the work of the Spanish court painter Goya, the Dutch Breughel dynasty and the Chinese artist Chu The-Chun.
For sheer entertainment, we suggest you treat yourself to the splendid production of The Beauty And The Beast at the Mogador Theatre. The run of this show adapted from the Disney movie, which in turn was adapted from a story by an 18th century French novelist, has been extended until July. This award winning musical has music by Disney Studios veteran Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice.
Everybody loves the circus and in Paris one of the world’s finest can be found. The Alexis Gruss National Circus is presenting its current production until March 2nd. This spectacular and breathtaking show includes the famous Alexis Gruss stallions, tightrope artiste Maud Florees, clown duo Tony Florees and Francesco Fratellini and a tableau of fourteen jugglers and acrobats. Be prepared to be amazed, especially by the horse juggling!
