The Festival d’Automne (Autumn Festival) is one of the most emblematic cultural events in the city of Paris. Although it is certainly open to international contributors, this unique multi-disciplinary festival is a true showcase for the French capital, taking place in venues throughout the entire city. The refined yet warmly inviting Hôtel de l’Université welcomes you to Paris. Located in the 7th arrondissement, its position in the heart of the city will allow you to reach the various venues of this colourful Festival with ease.
Autumn Festival: nearly 50 years of culture
The Festival d'Automne took place for the first time in 1972, with Michel Guy at the helm. It’s a resolutely contemporary celebration of the arts which showcases several disciplines, including theatre, music and dance. Over the years, it has succeeded in positioning itself high in the European cultural agenda alongside similar festivals in Berlin, Vienna and Venice. This year, it takes place from September 5th, 2020 to February 7th, 2021 in venues throughout Paris and the Ile-de-France region.
An original programme for 2020
Organised in the extraordinary context of the current health crisis, the Festival d'Automne has seized the opportunity to innovate. The 2020 season is marked by the strong presence of African performers such as Aristide Tarnagda, Dorothée Munyaneza and Sammy Baloji. Through song, theatre and the visual arts, their shows speak of a dynamic continent in full artistic ferment.
We can also recommend two retrospectives. The first is dedicated to Boris Charmatz, with 8 shows highlighting the talent of this French dancer and choreographer. The other retrospective is devoted to the Encyclopédie de la Parole, a project that explores the spoken word in all its diverse forms. This encyclopaedia is not a big book, but a collective of poets, actors, visual artists, ethnographers, musicians and other performers. Discover them, as you will many other artistes, during the 5 months of the Festival d'Automne.
