The Vincennes Zoo, a must-see in Paris

The Vincennes Zoo, a must-see in Paris

The Parc Zoologique de Paris, commonly called the Vincennes Zoo, is a wonderful place for observing wildlife in painstakingly recreated habitats. You can spend a great family day out at this remarkable attraction when you stay at the Hotel Université this summer.

A zoo in Paris

In 1931 a temporary menagerie was set up in Vincennes. This was so successful that it was decided to create a permanent zoo, which opened in 1934. However, by the early 21st century it was clear that the zoo could no longer conform to enlightened modern standards of animal welfare. The enclosures were too small for their residents and the place was becoming generally dilapidated. The zoo closed in 2008 for major renovations, which were completed in 2014. Today, it is a shining example of a progressive, conservation-oriented, modern zoo and the perfect place to spend a summer’s day.

Discovery and wildlife

The zoo park is now divided into five geographical biozones. These correspond to the environmental conditions of Europe, Amazon-Guyana, Madagascar, the Sahel-Sudan and Patagonia. Each biozone evokes a very specific environment, with each being designed to replicate, as closely as possible, the ecosystems the animals living there would typically experience. Thus, visitors can observe around 180 species behaving as they would in their natural habitat. The Vincennes Zoo also offers many activities. Younger guests can become trainee naturalists. You can also help to feed the giraffes their breakfast. And if that makes you hungry, the zoo has two restaurants and two picnic areas.

Vincennes; a zoo and a town

The zoo is located in Vincennes, a town that has many attractions. Very close to Paris and your Hotel Université, it has a floral park, château and, of course, an expanse of fine woodland. From here it’s easy to reach the Ferme de Paris (a working, educational farm), the Arboretum, the Garden of Tropical Agriculture and the Palais de la Porte Dorée. It’s an ideal place to complete your discovery of Paris. Easily accessible by Metro (lines 1 and 8), bus or tram (T3), Vincennes and its zoo are only minutes away from the capital.
